Overview of Amusement Ride Regulation
Regulation Type: 
Government officials inspect rides and investigate accidents
Inspection Program: 

State officials inspect rides at least once per year.

Investigative Authority: 

State inspectors are authorized to investigate serious accidents.

Reporting Criteria: 

Injury requiring off-site follow up medical care must be reported within 24 hours.

Patron Responsibility Law: 

1987 - Participants in "recreational activity" must obey warnings, use due care in many ways, and assume inherent risks. (Source: Amusement Ride, Tramway, and Ski Lift Safety Standards Annotated, May 1995).

Special Conditions: 

Waterslides are no longer annually inspected by the Department of Commerce; only the initial inspection. Annual inspections are the responsibility of the Department of Health and Family Services as of the Spring of 2003.
